A year after the government established the COVID Allocation of Resources for Employees (CARE) programme $300 million remains uncollected by applicants. The authorities have intensified efforts to find persons who have not yet collected the funds. It was revealed on Thursday that of the $17 billion disbursed based on applications to the CARE programme, $300 million or 2.1 per cent remains uncollected at the remittance agency Lasco Moneygram. The funds comprise SET Cash grants, General grants and Compassionate grants that were disbursed to remittance agencies at the request of applicants. However, it's reported that despite months of repeated SMS text messages, phone calls and emails, the applicants are yet to show up. The CARE programme will make a final attempt to find these individuals by publishing their names. The names will be published in newspapers on May 8. The CARE programme says funds that remain uncollected from Lasco MoneyGram agencies on May 30 will be returned to the Consolidated Fund. This is in keeping with Jamaica's laws and regulations. More than 500,000 Jamaicans have benefitted from the CARE programme which was established to provide support to employees who were either laid off or had their jobs terminated following economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
