I guarantee that if you stop a random person on the streets of Montego Bay and ask them about jobs opportunities here, they are going to tell you about “Zone” or Freeport.
But before I tell you what the “Zone” or Freeport is, let me go back to my initial yes and no answer.
“Yes” because, there are more than a few businesses that are privately and publicly owned here in Montego Bay.
Businesses need employees in order to function as you know, so technically they would provide job opportunities for those living in and around Montego Bay.
“Yes” Also, to the fact that a large number of people from other parishes who works in Montego Bay as well. With Montego Bay being big on tourism, you find that the hotels employ a lot of persons who live outside of the city.
But “No” because, even though Montego Bay is home a wide range of professional categories, eg:
Business Management
Finance,
Engineering,
Quality management,
Education,
Medicine,
Auto mechanic,
Computing,
Paralegal,
Information communications etc.,
... most of the available jobs are usually skewed to the call center jobs in the freezone which requires a specific range of skills (telemarketing an customer service usually) and therefore does not utilize the wide range of Jamaican skill sets.

But Why?
Well, maybe its because the people who work in some of the businesses listed above tend to stay in their jobs for a longer period.
And with Montego Bay providing just a handful of each, these positions are snatched as fast as they become available.
So what happens to the rest of these persons who’ve gone on to higher education and other careers that I haven’t even mentioned you ask?
Well, they either leave the country to seek opportunity else where or, or they apply for a job, perhaps indirectly unrelated to their training in the Montego Bay Freezone.
What Is This 'Zone' (Freezone)?

Montego Bay Free-zone or the “Zone” is Located in Freeport , Montego Bay.
The “Zone” is essentially the offshore zone, where most of the companies are owned by bigger companies outside of Jamaica (most often the United States) provide job opportunities for the locals.
Most if not all these companies have something to do with telemarketing and customer service - and we have happy know that we are getting new ones very often now!
There are now a number of these companies that provide these services - with hundreds of different accounts!
This means, you and I can be working for the same company, but different account (with an account being another company)
Each account has its own SBU (strategic business unit) manager, team managers and supervisors - that's where job opportunities are created.
That said, I've curated links to some of the top jobs in Montego Bay for you. See below.
