Employees entitled to three hours off from work to vote, EoJ reaffirms
In the wake of reports that some employers have indicated to workers that they will not be allowed time-off to vote on Thursday, the Electoral Office of Jamaica ( EoJ) has issued a news release stressing that voters are entitled to three hours from work to cast their vote. The three hours are in addition to the usual lunch hour. The EoJ says it has come to its attention that several employers have indicated to staff that they will only be allowed two hours to vote. It is cautioning employers that, under the Representation of the People (Leave and Symbols) Regulations, workers have the right to time off to vote. The law does not apply to persons who commence work at 10 a.m., or later, or end work at or before 2 p.m. The EoJ is encouraging workers to make arrangements with their employers before going to vote.
