ST ANN, Jamaica — Karisma Hotels and Resorts is set to break ground early next year for its US$1-billion Sugarcane Bay multi-resort development in Llandovery, St Ann.
The project will add 4,800 new rooms over 10 years.
“We are set to break ground in the first quarter of 2020 to improve on our room count here in Jamaica,” Vice President of Karisma, Ruben Becerra, said.
“We already have a presence in Negril with two other properties… and we are ready to move on to our biggest project yet in Jamaica,” he said.
Becerra was speaking at a cocktail reception for the ninth Caribbean Hotel Investment Conference and Operations Summit (CHICOS) held at Secrets Resort in Montego Bay on November 13.
Becerra said that the project has been in the making for some time, and the company is happy to be getting it off the ground.
He noted that the investment is a testament of Karisma's commitment and confidence in Jamaica and will create approximately 8,000 new jobs and engage another 5,000 people indirectly.

Meanwhile, Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, said he is happy that the development will finally start.
“We have been having numerous discussions surrounding the investment in St Ann and now we are finally here. I am now pleased that with all the necessary approvals granted, this megaproject will begin to get under way,” he said.
The Tourism Minister said that with the addition of the 4,800 rooms by Karisma, the goal of 15,000 new rooms by 2021 “is now a lot closer than we could have ever imagined”.
“And, of course, there will be more visitors and the creation of more jobs,” Bartlett added.
Karisma Hotels & Resorts, which has been in Jamaica since 2014, is a popular luxury chain with some 26 properties in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe under several brands, including El Dorado, Azul, Generations, Sensatori and Nickelodeon.
