We’ve been taught to think that ‘if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.’ For a lot of people, the prospect of getting paid to work online while you sit at home sounds precisely that: too good to be true.
best online jobsImmediately, they get skeptical of online jobs and decide it must be impossible to make any considerable amount of money in such an unconventional way.
This line of reasoning makes no sense. Lots of office jobs primarily revolve around doing tasks on a computer – why shouldn’t you get paid to do the same thing at home? If you’re providing a valuable service that you can do online, why shouldn’t you be financially compensated for the value you’ve providing?
An increasing number of companies are offering their employees remote working options – or even hiring remote workers who will never step foot in the office. As we head into the next decade, online working in all its forms is going to become more common.

Simple Online Service Jobs
Here are the best online job opportunities for simple services that anyone can do:
1. Virtual Assistant
A virtual assistant is another job that almost anyone can do. As a virtual assistant, you will work for a business or individual and perform basic tasks such as scheduling, customer support, and administration.
You can expect to earn between $19 and $25 an hour. Jobs can be found on sites such as FlexJobs or job sites like Indeed.
To learn more, check out our detailed post on how to become a virtual assistant. If you want to jump right in, I highly recommend my friend Gina’s 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success Course.

2. Transcribing
Transcribing means writing out audio or video files to text, and is an online job that still must be performed by humans since robots are unreliable.
Transcription jobs are often outsourced because they require a lot of attention to detail and can be difficult. The likelihood of you earning a decent hourly wage by transcribing depends on how quickly you can type and who your client is. Your earning potential will increase over time, but it’s still not a very lucrative online job. However, if you like working online and transcribe in an industry you find interesting, it might be the perfect online job for you.
There are a few sites anybody can join. One of these is Scribie: you have to pass an online test, but this is relatively basic, and then you’re good to go. Scribie claims that you can earn between $5 and $25 an hour – however, the reality may be as low as $3 an hour if you’re not quick enough.
Another option is Transcribe Me, who claims to have ‘the industry’s best rates’; they claim to pay between $15 and $22 an hour. However, the reality is that this number is likely to be much lower.
However, don’t despair yet – there are some better-paying sites, but they can be competitive to get into.
For instance, Rev offers $0.36 to $0.65 per audio minute for transcriptions. If you know a foreign language, you can earn even more – between $1.50 and $3 per minute. The average transcriber on Rev makes between $8 and $15 an hour.
Only 10% of applicants get accepted. To get in, you’ll be tested on your typing skills and grammar, and then you’ll have to pass a transcription test.
Another option is Go Transcript, where you can earn up to $0.60 per minute. Again, you must pass an assessment to get a job. Finally, Speechpad offers $0.25 to $2.50 per minute, which works out at least $15 an hour. However, they demand high quality and experienced transcribers – you’re unlikely to get accepted unless you start on another platform first.
Transcription is best suited for those who are looking for a side hustle, rather than a full-time job, but it’s possible to turn transcribing into a career if you’re prepared to specialize within a well-paying industry.
Editing transcripts for court reporters is called scoping; instead of transcribing audio, scoping involves turning shorthand from court reports into legible writing. You can expect to earn between $20 and $30 an hour
Medical transcribing is another option, although this requires a certificate approved the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity to work in the USA. The earning potential is similar to scoping.
3. Complete Small Micro-Tasks
Completing micro-tasks is an online job that’s about as accessible as they come. Almost anybody with a computer and some basic skills is capable of this kind of work.
A micro-task is a small task a gig worker completes for a company; typical jobs include photo tagging and captioning, surveys, keyword searches, data entry, and short editing.
Although not very lucrative, micro-tasks are incredibly flexible, and you can complete them from anywhere in the world. It could be worth considering if you want to make some extra money on the side here and there, or if you only want an online job as a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution.
One of the most popular websites is Mechanical Turk (also known as M Turk), a site started by Amazon for independent contractors who want to complete micro-tasks. People like you.
Some of the jobs last a few minutes, others much for much more extended periods. Some require zero qualifications, while others demand more specific skills. Although the median hourly wage is only $2 an hour, it’s possible to make up to $10 an hour by being selective about the work you take on and quick to snatch up the best-paying gigs.
Another option is Clickworker, which works in a very similar way to M Turk. According to other accounts, it’s possible to make up to $20 an hour once you hit your stride, but it may take some practice to get there.
Finally, The Smart Crowd claims to be ‘the world’s largest provider of online work.’ It focuses almost entirely on data entry. The wage is expected to work out at between $5 and $6 an hour.
However, it’s possible to make a more significant amount of money if you specialize in one specific area instead of completing all kinds of random tasks.

4. Proofreading
Proofreading could be a better choice if you have great grammar skills but would prefer not to write anything from scratch. It’s also an easy online job that you can scale – meaning you can spend your time getting clients and then hire other proofreaders to do the work.
As well as offering your services on freelancing websites, you could check job boards such as JournalismJobs and MediaBistro.

5. Become a Blogger
Becoming a blogger can be a lot more lucrative than most people realize. Here’s a detailed post on how to make money blogging. It’s not only advertising you can make money from but also affiliate marketing and selling digital products (such as online courses) or services (such as one-on-one coaching).
If you start a blog that gains traction and popularity, the earning potential is almost limitless. It’s possible to earn a six-figure salary from your blog, even if you stop creating new posts.
However, you can’t expect to make this much money when you’re first starting. It generally takes at least six months of writing regularly (at least two posts a week, preferably more) on a blog. It may take years. There’s also no guarantee that your blog will ever become popular, and a six-figure salary is certainly no guarantee.
However, if you have a strong enough interest in a specific topic popular enough to become a profitable niche, and if you’re not desperate to start making money immediately, blogging could be a great option.
