University lecturer Dr. Jermaine McCalpin thinks a world war is unlikely to result from the assassination of Iran's most powerful military commander, General Qasem Soleimani, by the United States. He was killed at Baghdad airport in Iraq, along with other Iran-backed militia figures, early on Friday in a strike ordered by US President Donald Trump. Mr. Soleimani's killing marks a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran and many have expressed fear it could lead to a world war. However, Dr. McCalpin, who is Chair of African and African American Studies at the New Jersey City University, says while he expects Iran to retaliate, he does not think other countries will join in. "Iran is almost likely in a solo fight should this become war progression. Though they have regional allies, I can't imagine that others will be drawn into the fray. Equally, I don't anticipate that Saudi Arabia or any of America's allies in the region are really wanting the war to happen," he contended. Dr. McCalpin said he expects increased security in the US and at its bases worldwide, which Iran is expected to target. The university lecturer, who was speaking on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, said President Trump's threat to target Iranian cultural sites, should Iran retaliate, will put Americans at home at risk. He said the escalation also has implications for oil prices because Iran is a major producer of oil.
