Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said the government is putting together a comprehensive anti-crime plan, new aspects of which will be implemented this year.
He was speaking Wednesday at the Heal The Family, Heal The Nation 15th Annual National Gathering in St. Andrew. Mr. Holness told the gathering the government will be using all tools at its disposal - including the equipment of the police, more resources to assist in public order and traffic management, Zones of Special Operations and States of Public Emergency - to significantly reduce crime and violence. Mr. Holness noted that the crime fight is even harder than before and urged members of the clergy to encourage their congregations to share information about criminals. "Some of us know where the guns are.... I appeal to the nation, don't create an environment of support for the criminals who are close to you. Don't give them supper. Don't support them. Be smart about what you're doing. Share information," he urged. Symbolic handshake In the meantime, the Prime Minister and Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips shook hands Wednesday afternoon in a show of unity in the fight against crime. "This is going to be a great year for Jamaica. We are going to break the back of the crime problem and we are going to break the back of the violence problem and I know that I have the support of the praying people of Jamaica. I encourage you to continue to pray for the peace of the nation," he said as he extended the invitation to shake hands to Dr. Phillips.
